Seeds you can plant directly in the ground
  • Beans (pole and bush)
  • Beets
  • Broccoli raab (might be better to plant this towards mid July)
  • Carrot
  • Chard
  • Corn (a quick-growing variety)
  • Cucumber (early to mid July is actually the best time to plant cucumbers to avoid most pests)
  • lettuce (sow 10 seeds a week)
  • Summer Squash (Also a good time to plant this to avoid pests)
  • Turnip
  • Flower seeds like nasturtium, zinnia, sunflower, calendula, bachelor's button. I like to pull out weeds and stick flower seeds in their spots. The roots essentially tilled the hard soil for me!
Indoors in cell trays-Preparing for fall planting. Most seedlings for fall planting get seeded in late May to mid June and are transplanted around now, but faster-growing things can be seeded now.
  • Quick-growing cauliflower or broccoli
  • Chard
  • Collards
  • Kale
  • Tatsoi
  • Turnips for greens

Vegetables you can transplant if you have seedlings
  • Basil
  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Cauliflower
  • Chard
  • Collards
  • Endive/radicchio
  • Fennel
  • Kale
  • Kohlrabi

A note on where to get these things: Natureworks still has seeds, and always keeps a good stock of what can currently be planted. Seed catologs are also still mailing seeds to order. Natureworks is the only garden center I know of that gets fall vegetable seedlings, usually starting early/mid August into September, and they have a good variety. Seedlings for most fall crops are started in mid May-mid June, so you can get a jump on planning for next year.
